Parable of the Sparrow and Two Sisters

Two little sisters, after listening to the biblical story of the expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise, said to their dad:

"Dad, if Lena and I were in paradise, we would never eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. After all, God didn’t allow for it to be touched, isn't that right, dad?

“Correct,” the father smiled and put the children to bed.

The next morning, the father got up before everyone else, caught a sparrow in the yard and put it in a saucepan. Having woken up the girls, he showed them the saucepan, placed it on the windowsill of the open window in the kitchen and said:

"Please do not remove the lid until I come home from work. When I return, I will show you the surprise that is there. If you're obedient, I'll buy you a new game."

The parents went to work and the girls were left alone. They tried with all their might to distract themselves from the saucepan. They had already played all the games they knew, but curiosity haunted them - they really wanted to look into the saucepan. In the end, the eldest Masha persuaded the youngest Lena, who was still afraid that their dad would be angry, to look into the saucepan.

“We’ll just take one peek and close it,” she said. “Dad won’t even know.”

But as soon as Lena lifted the lid, the sparrow flew out the window. Frightened, the girls slammed the empty saucepan shut. In the evening the father returned and, seeing that the saucepan was empty, said:

"Well, little Eves, you couldn’t resist and released the bird? Likewise Eve could not resist trying the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil.

"Dad, what kind of tree was that? Why couldn't you eat from it?" – asked Masha.

"The tree was ordinary, the fruits were edible, but, violating God’s prohibition, the first people themselves chose evil instead of good, because all evil begins with disobedience, but if they were obedient God would have taught them everything that is good. This sparrow was the tree of good and evil for you today, and you also did not listen to me. You failed the test."
